How do I check a doctor’s licence?

Get the person’s full name and licence details. Then use the board’s own record to check the name.

Find the right board

A state medical board keeps doctors’ licence records and shows any penalties it has made public. The medical degree Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine is shortened to DO. In some states, doctors with this degree fall under a separate board.

The Federation of State Medical Boards website carries links to those boards.

Open the board covering the state in which the visit takes place. For a doctor with DO after their name, look for a board labelled osteopathic. If the directory lists separate boards, ask which one holds that doctor’s licence. Look for the board’s licence search.

Read the record, not just the name

Match the full name and licence details with what the care service gave you. Check whether the licence is current. Open any documents about penalties or formal charges brought by the board.

Boards differ in what they publish. A record with no public penalties is not proof of good care. It may not show every complaint.

For an online visit, ask about your location

A clinician is a health professional who provides care, such as a doctor or nurse. A clinician needs a licence or other permission covering the place where the patient is, federal health guidance said on September 26, 2026.

Ask whether that permission covers the state where you will attend the appointment. Tell the service if travel will change that location.

If something does not match

Pause the comparison. Ask the service to explain the mismatch, or ask the board how to read its record.

Keep a note of what was checked and when.
